In human cervical carcinomas papillomavirus DNA is frequently integrated in the cell genome. We have cloned the integration site of human papillomavirus-18 DNA in human chromosome region 12q13-15 present in the SW756 cervical carcinoma cell line. Viral DNA is broken from nucleotides 2643 to 3418 in the E1 and E2 open reading frames, resulting in a deletion of 775 bases of viral DNA. Cloning and sequence analysis of the rearranged and germline alleles shows that there is no homology between the target cellular and viral DNA, suggesting it is a nonhomologous recombination. The target cellular region is called papillomavirus associated locus 2 (PAL2). The 5'- and 3'-flanking probes derived from the hybrid viral-cellular clone detect completely different germline restriction fragments in DNA from cells with normal chromosome 12. There is no overlap between the restriction maps of the target germline clones obtained with 5'- and 3'-flanking probes. Probes from these germline clones beyond the breakpoint position do not detect any DNA rearrangement in SW756 cells DNA. These data prove that there is a deletion of cellular DNA as consequence of the integration, with an estimated minimum size of 14 kilobases. Both cellular flanking probes are outside the amplicon of this chromosome region identified in the OSA and RMS13 sarcoma cell lines, comprising SAS-CHOP-CDK4-MDM2 genes and where translocation breakpoints are located in liposarcomas. The integration at 12q13-15 might have been selected by its contribution to the tumor phenotype. This work was supported in part by grants from Comisio ́n Inter-ministerial de Ciencia y Tecnologı ́a (SAF94/059), Fundacio ́n Ramo ́nAreces, and Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (FIS95/413). The influence of dietary essential fatty acid on bivalve larval growth and survival has been reported by several authors. The objectives of the current research were (1) to describe fatty acid composition of Mytilus galloprovincialis D-larvae and (2) to investigate the influence of algal lipid composition on larval growth and survival. Larvae were fed with two diets, A (Tetraselmis suecica + Isochrisis galbana) and B (Tetraselmis suecica + Chaetoceros sp). After fifteen days the larval growth was significantly higher with diet B than with diet A. The survival was also different, being 28% in diet A and 22.4 % in diet B. The percentages of veliger, pediveliger and amorphous larvae were higher in group A than in B, while in the latter there were not amorphous larvae and the 21 % were postlarvae. So, the microalgae Chaetoceros sp seems to enhance larvae growth and development. The difference in diet also produced changes in fatty acid profiles being the most important change ones (1) the increase of 14:0 in both groups, (2) 16:0 decreased in group A but it increased in group B and (3) total MUFA showed higher levels in both trials. Total PUFA n-6 level was higher in group A due to the 18:2n-6 increase. Arachidonic acid level was augmented with both diets. EPA level diminished in group A but it augmented in group B, DHA behaviour was opposite, increasing in group A but decreasing in group B. This is due to the high level of EPA in Chaetoceros sp and DHA in Isochrysis galbana (Fernández-Reiriz et al., 2006). These results do not coincide with other studies which suggest that DHA is a key requirement for larval development and growth of other bivalve species (Caers et al., 1999). In our case diet rich in EPA seems to be better in mussel larva culture than the diet rich in DHA. Reproduction of the blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in wild populations follows seasonal changes of environmental factors such as food availability. The aim of this experiment was to analyse the effects of three conditioning diets on the maturation and development of M. galloprovincialis. We experimented three different algae-based treatments: two Non-Tetraselmis (NT) groups and one Tetraselmis (TS) group. Those in the NT groups received a mixture of Isochrysis galbana (clon T-Iso) and Chaetoceros sp. (1:1, based on cell volume). Those in the TS group received Isochrysis sp. (T-Iso), Chaetoceros sp., and Tetraselmis suecica (1:1:1, based on cell volume). Mussels in the NT-1, NT-2 and TS groups received, respectively, 1%, 2% and 2% of the mussels dry weight (MDW) based in algae dry weight (ADW) a day. After 2 months of conditioning, significant changes between wild mussels and the NT-1 group were not detected either in condition index (CI) value or in gonad stadia percentages. On the opposite, after conditioning CI values of mussels having received 2 % ration were higher than those of wild populations and NT-1 group, and ripe female percentage was higher in the TS group than in the NT-2 group. As a conclusion, this study demonstrates that for M. galloprovincialis conditioning, 1% of the MDW in ADW is not enough, and that a varied diet is more suitable. This work was supported by Interreg Project 0251_ECOAQUA_5_E, financed by the EDRF (European Regional Development Fund). www.juntadeandalucia.es/agriculturaypesca/ifapa/ecoaqua. </p

High-speed noise-free optical quantum memory

Quantum networks promise to revolutionise computing, simulation, and communication. Light is the ideal information carrier for quantum networks, as its properties are not degraded by noise in ambient conditions, and it can support large bandwidths enabling fast operations and a large information capacity. Quantum memories, devices that store, manipulate, and release on demand quantum light, have been identified as critical components of photonic quantum networks, because they facilitate scalability. However, any noise introduced by the memory can render the device classical by destroying the quantum character of the light. Here we introduce an intrinsically noise-free memory protocol based on two-photon off-resonant cascaded absorption (ORCA). We consequently demonstrate for the first time successful storage of GHz-bandwidth heralded single photons in a warm atomic vapour with no added noise; confirmed by the unaltered photon statistics upon recall. Our ORCA memory platform meets the stringent noise-requirements for quantum memories whilst offering technical simplicity and high-speed operation, and therefore is immediately applicable to low-latency quantum networks

During the last decade, the communication companies sector, considering as such both media and advertising agencies, has greatly changed professional practices. The value of the services offered to advertisers and users is being compromised. This research studies the incidence of technology in the changes in the sector's competitive structure, using Aragon (Spain) as a case study. Through methodological triangulation, we analyze data from the main national and international reports, the impressions of professionals, advertisers and users. In the present study, we propose a contextual framework for strategic decision-makers. It not only describes the current situation, but also allows for a glimpse at trends. Functions that, traditionally, were taken on board by publicity agencies have been internalized, both in the advertising companies and in the media, given the ease of implementation offered by the new communication channels. Now, both conventional media and new digital advertising media reach advertisers directly, eliminating what is perceived as intermediation without added value. In a technological context in which the costs of information and transactions have been greatly reduced, it is time for each economic agent to reflect on his real contribution in the value chain. With our research, we have put forward some key factors that allow assistance for those who should take that kind of decisions, whether media or agencies, in order to understand their customers' decision-making processes

In Digital We Trust: The Computerisation of Retail Finance in Western Europe and North America

This paper tells of the contents of a forthcoming volume, which offers a new and original approach to the study of technological change in retail finance. Most business history studies of businesses for the last 50 years note the emergence of computers and computer applications, but they do not analyze their role in shaping business practices and organizations. In this book we look directly at the processes of mechanisation and computerisation of retail financial services, throughout the 20th Century while articulating an international comparison. We bring together young, well established and independent historians, who come from different traditions (that is, economic, business, accounting, geography and political histories as well as historians of technology). Contributors look at stand alone and comparative case studies from different parts of the world (namely Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Mexico and the USA). The outcome is a rich survey of the broad literature examining different aspects of the technological and business histories of retail financial markets from a variety of perspectives

We analyze the changes in the management of corporate communication due to the influence of new technologies, using as a case study the market of advertising agencies in the Autonomous Community of Aragon (Spain). In order to determine if the gender of those in management positions of the advertisers influences the way of managing the new business environment, a descriptive analysis was carried out using the focus group as a research technique. As a study variable, gender was selected, so two different sessions were held, one with men and the other with women, in order to analyze the characteristics of the advertiser vs. agency relationship. The main conclusion we reached in this research is that there is a different interest for men and women in relation to the different parameters of analysis. While men paid more attention to external competitiveness and the need to react quickly and forcefully to changes, women were more concerned about the disappearance of interdepartmental borders and the way marketing decisions are made
